Legislators are commonly criticized for being out of touch with the real needs of people living in poverty, people in communities of color, and other groups who have been systematically at a disadvantage.
RJ has a lived experience that intersects with the life experience of many different Oregonians. This is why so many are proud to endorse his campaign and why so many understand his connection with their advocacy to better serve YOU. His history of community service deepens his understanding of the complex issues impacting the community and engaging with people impacted directly helps to inform the direction of his leadership. Here’s some organizations and individuals who will tell you the same.

Letters to the editor are a great way to get to spread the word about RJ and why you support him. Use this tool now to submit a letter to the editor in your local newspapers and increase awareness to persuade your neighbors to join #TeamRJ this election cycle. Encourage folks to get involved this year by supporting and volunteering.
First, choose which publications you want to submit letters to, then use our sample letter below as a guide to writing your own letter to the editor about why you support RJ and why your neighbors should support him as well!
Start with a quick intro on why you’re writing in. LTEs are most successful when they’re tied to something that’s a recent news story: “With redistricting, this year’s race will be our opportunity to elect a candidate who is as diverse at the district the Salem and Keizer is.”
Then set the stage for the issue you care about: With troops struggling after returning from Afghanistan and now the possibility of war in Ukraine, I’m important that we have a leader who can empathize with our nations bravest and who has a record of showing up for Veterans. That’s why I’m supporting Ramiro “RJ” Navarro for the Democratic nomination.
Add in the personal reasons this issue matters to you and why you support the candidate: “Having family members that served, I know first-hand that Veterans have many barriers to accessing the services and support they’ve earned. Healthcare through the V.A.(if they qualify) often doesn’t cover transportation from rural commuinties into metro communtities like Salem where all the providers are. As a family member of a Vietnam Veteran, I worry that by the time services are received – it might be too late. Oregon ranks among the worst states for retiring Veterans and Veterans struggling with homelessness. The time is now to give back to those who’ve given up so much for us and the freedoms we take for granted every day.
Connect back to the candidate: Navarro is the only candidate who will combine his history of advocacy with lived experience and empathy to deliver the results needed for change. That’s why he was recognized in Vets News earlier this year for his hard work and accomplishments.
Closeout with a clear ask: It’s past time that our Veterans got the Welcome Home that they deserve – and they shouldn’t have to wait any longer. If you want to ensure that we can get beneficial services to all Veterans – please join me in supporting Ramiro “RJ” Navarro as the next State Representative of House District 21.
It’s simple: you can use this template when writing about healthcare, immigrants’ rights, reproductive rights, workers’ rights, and other issues you know RJ will be a champion for. Let’s give working families a fighting chance in this economy and spread the word about why you and groups across Oregon have endorsed RJ for House District 21.
Keep it short! A letter should be 300-500 words.
Focus on one idea. If you have more to say, you can write more letters!
Be personal. Connecting to your family or individual history will make your letter powerful and memorable.
Ask your reader for action. In this case, it’s to donate and vote.
RJ for State Representative
I’m happy to support Ramiro “RJ” Navarro Jr in his bid for State Representative. Oregon’s House District 21 deserves a real Democrat representing them, and that’s Navarro. As our district continues to grow more diverse and progressive, we need a champion like RJ in representing our community. He knows that healthcare is a right, that working families deserve a fair deal, that immigrants should be treated with dignity, and that Veterans deserve the respect they’ve earned. He supports a clear pathway to citizenship and expediting the green card process by eliminating country-based quotas. Even though the Latinx population makes up a third of the district, they have actively been ignored when it comes to the needs of this community. I urge my neighbors to support Navarro in the Democratic primary this spring.
